Bourke Street Bakery’s success comes down to an effective monopoly on gourmet sausage rolls. With the flagship savoury roll being sub-$5, a store count at 10 and then a foray into meat pies, no one was surprised seeing Pie Face call in the administrators.
Don’t waste your time with sandwiches or yogurt. Even the artisan bread is a little steep.
The famous roll is asymmetric but don’t be perturbed; this demonstrates hand-made quality. Like a child, each one is unique.
Pork & Fennel Sausage Roll – $4.80
This roll easily passes the decadence test when the bag becomes transparent inside 60s. Despite the greasiness, high turnover means no sogginess to the buttery pastry. The legend is true. Amazingly tasty and almost feels light. 5/5.
Aspirations now turn to BSB’s pie competency, less known to the public. Cost is a tough ask as $5.50 has massive purchasing power in Marrickville.
Chicken Pie, Sweet Potato, Pea & Lime Pickle – $5.50
Meat pie plus a swirl of tomato sauce is commonly spotted on public-funded construction sites or public school canteens. That said, today is Australia Day.
Pastry base is certainly more dense than the sausage roll counterpart. Perhaps it’s a structural necessity like a double bricked house under the flight path. The upper carapace is the flakiest part and should be treasured.
Two bites required to diligence the filler. I’m in brace position.
Childhood pie trauma recalls a grizzly interior with inconspicuous carcass parts that milk teeth cannot break down. Trauma is overcome as I work through ‘real‘ chicken. Spoon this mix out, pair with jasmine rice and you’ve got a quick fix Asian stir fry dinner. I’m so thankful that meat content >25%, which is the legal minimum.
Good flavours but let’s be honest; 2-3 pies is required for a full stomach. On that basis, BSB roll > BSB pie > Pie Face’s entire range. 4/5.

Will I be returning?
Once a year.
Behind the screen the staff are hard at work constructing a 3m long sausage roll.
Did not get to try the sweet goods. Looks a little small.
